Lovable vs ellul

Generated React app, or engineered software.

Lovable is a prompt-to-app builder for non-engineers and prototypers. Ellul is the persistent workstation an engineer's AI agent lives on, working inside a real codebase. They serve different users, so the right answer is usually 'pick by your workflow.'

Updated

The fundamental difference

Lovable abstracts the codebase. Ellul puts an engineer's agent inside a real codebase. The two products serve adjacent but non-overlapping users. We list the comparison because some search queries land both products on the same shortlist.

Where Lovable is strong

Lovable's pitch is 'idea to live React app in minutes.' For a non-engineer or someone prototyping, Lovable's polished prompt-to-deployed flow is hard to match. There's no IDE, no terminal, no dependency wrangling, just a prompt and a URL.

Where ellul is stronger

Engineering work where your agent (Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode) lives on a persistent server with your repo, your installed dependencies, your MCP servers, and your real credentials. The agent works the way an engineer works, with version control and deploy targets you choose.

Verdict

Different shapes for different users; almost no real overlap.

Lovable is the right tool for a non-engineer who wants a working React app from a prompt. Ellul is the right tool for an engineer with an AI agent who wants their agent in their real codebase, with their real tooling, on a persistent workstation. We get this question because both show up under 'AI builds my software' searches, but the answer is almost always 'they're not in the same category.'

When to use each

Use Lovable when

  • You don't write code, or don't want to.
  • You want a working React app on a hosted URL fast.
  • You're prototyping, demoing, or learning, not shipping production engineering.
  • Hosting on Lovable's runtime is acceptable, and you don't need your own deploy target.

Use ellul when

  • You're an engineer running AI coding agents on real codebases.
  • You want code in your git repo, deployed where you choose.
  • Your agent needs real-credential operations gated by a passkey.
  • You want to keep your existing IDE, model, and tools.
  • You expect to run agents in parallel or unattended.

Common questions

Is Lovable a coding agent?

Not in the same sense as Claude Code or Cursor. Lovable generates and hosts apps; there is no agent CLI to keep using, and the model behind it is product-controlled. The agent is implicit, not addressable.

Can I export a Lovable app to GitHub and continue with an agent on Ellul?

Yes. Lovable supports GitHub export. The exported code is yours; you can clone it onto an Ellul workstation and continue with Cursor or Claude Code or your preferred agent. Many engineers we talk to do exactly this once a Lovable prototype graduates into a real product.

Lovable vs Bolt vs Base44: which is closest to Ellul?

None of them. They're all prompt-to-app builders for non-engineers; Ellul is a persistent workstation for an engineer's agent. We have head-to-head pages for each of the builders if you want the comparisons among them, but the comparison to Ellul is structurally similar across all three.

Is Lovable cheaper than Ellul?

Headline tiers are in the same range, but Lovable's heavier usage tiers add up. Ellul's pricing is flat at $20 or $50 per month; the bill doesn't change with agent usage.

What about Lovable's roadmap?

Lovable has been investing in code quality and export quality through 2025. If they ship a product that lets engineers point their existing agent CLI at a Lovable workspace with real-credential gating, the comparison narrows. Today it's still a prompt-to-hosted-app product.
