Base44 vs ellul

Generated app, or engineered software.

Base44 builds entire apps from prompts in a managed runtime, designed for non-engineers, acquired by Wix. Ellul is for engineers who want their AI agent on a persistent workstation, working inside their real codebase. Different products, different users.

Updated

The fundamental difference

Base44 abstracts away the codebase. Ellul puts an engineer's agent inside a real codebase. The two products do not really compete; they serve adjacent users with non-overlapping needs. We list the comparison only because the question shows up.

Where Base44 is strong

Base44's category is 'idea to v1 app' for people who don't write code. The runtime is integrated; the deployment is integrated; the model behind it is hidden. For a non-engineer with a clear idea and modest needs, the time-to-MVP is hard to beat.

Where ellul is stronger

Engineering work in real codebases: code review, refactors, multi-day migrations, real-credential operations, parallel agents, integration with your existing stack. The shape of the user is 'professional engineer with an agent' rather than 'non-coder building a v0 app'.

Verdict

Different products for different users; choose by your workflow shape.

If you can't write code and want an app, Base44 is in your category. If you write code, want your AI agent inside your real codebase, and want production-grade controls, Ellul is in your category. The two products rarely come up in the same evaluation; we wrote this comparison because some users searched for it.

When to use each

Use Base44 when

  • You don't write code and want an app from a prompt.
  • You're happy hosting on Base44/Wix infrastructure.
  • Your needs fit a v0 single-purpose app rather than an integrated codebase.
  • Time-to-first-MVP is the binding constraint.

Use ellul when

  • You're an engineer with an AI agent and a real codebase.
  • You want your code in your git repo, deployed where you choose.
  • Your agent needs to do credential-touching work safely.
  • You want to keep your existing tools, model, and editor.
  • You expect to run agents in parallel or unattended.

Common questions

Is Base44 a coding agent?

Not in the same sense as Claude Code or Cursor. Base44 generates apps end-to-end from prompts and hosts them. There is no concept of an agent CLI you keep using; the model is hidden inside the product.

Can I export my Base44 app and run it on Ellul?

Export is limited and depends on the Wix/Base44 plan. The shape that's worth checking is whether the generated codebase comes out as something you can keep developing, and whether you'd want to. The two products are different enough that 'migrate from Base44 to Ellul' usually means 'rewrite, not migrate.'

Why is this comparison even on this site?

Some users searching 'AI app builder vs AI coding agent' end up with both Base44 and Ellul on their list. We put together an honest comparison so you don't have to triangulate from product pages. They're meaningfully different shapes.

Does Base44 still exist as a product after the Wix acquisition?

Base44 continues to ship as a Wix property. The naming and bundling have shifted with successive Wix releases; for current details, the Base44 product page is the source of truth.

What about Lovable, Bolt, V0?

All in the same prompt-to-app builder category, with different polish and different model stacks. Same orthogonality to Ellul as Base44: they make apps from prompts, Ellul gives engineers a place to put their agent. We have a separate Lovable comparison and a Bolt comparison if you want the head-to-heads.
